Xavier Zhang is a Singaporean Chinese artist who
works in New York City.

My art is always personal and a deep part of my life’s journey. The desire to be transparent with my emotions through my paintings and to create an unnerving tension between living in reality and living in memories.

The medium choices stem directly from my father’s influence as a Chinese calligrapher, an eastern medicine practitioner, and the harsh environment I grew up in. Or the parts I remember.

Faded Memories is about digging up past traumas, either buried in my subconscious or in the darker side of my heart, it explores cumulative traumatic experiences and dissociative amnesia.

I find myself in a state of recollection through creation and abstract expressions; often unlocking deep memories from growing up with very complex family dynamics.

My work is an ongoing process of restoring, coping, and healing. Retracing hidden memories, confronting and piecing them together. Sometimes it’s a specific moment, sometimes it’s uncovering a recollection of memories and stories.

Emotional archeology.

I believe the greatest treasures are to be found somewhere between hurt and healing.
